Your right to a Good Faith Estimate

If you are uninsured or choose not to use insurance, you generally have the right to a written estimate of expected charges for non-emergency health care. You can request an estimate before scheduling.

When you schedule care at least three business days in advance, your provider generally must supply an estimate. Ask for the expected costs of the services you plan to receive, and keep a copy for your records.

If a provider’s bill is at least $400 more than that provider’s estimate, you may be eligible for the federal patient-provider dispute process. You generally must begin a dispute within 120 calendar days of the initial bill.
